The Learning Designs Story
Karen Ostlund
Founder, Owner, and Academic Coach
Karen has a Masters in Special Education and works as special ed teacher for the Isanti school district. She grew up in Minneapolis before transplanting to the country. She has been tutoring for over 15 years, and loves working with students to help them unlock their academic superpowers!
In 1995 Karen Ostlund was pregnant with her oldest while finishing her undergrad degree. As part of her bachelors in elementary education, she had to do one-on-one tutoring. She absolutely loved it, and word spread quickly about her services. From there the business took off. It was the best of teaching and education- creative and custom curriculum design and personal relationships with students. She was also able to do it while being a present mother to her young kids. Soon, the business grew so much that she had to hire on additional tutors. From the beginning, she has hand selected tutors who are highly skilled, passionate, and excited to teach. Karen loved what she did, but there was still an element she wanted to add- diagnostic and interventional skills. She returned to school to get her master's in special education to enhance her business and be able to offer quality service to all students regardless of ability, and to help offer early intervention and identification of learning struggles. Today, she lives in Isanti Minnesota, where she has expanded her services, while still operating her company for the entire twin cities area and beyond. She is grateful that she gets to live her passion every day by assisting students as they grow and learn.
